For The Love of Money or Love or Both - JRWI Weekly
Ideas on balancing entrepreneurial drive with wellness, bringing to life new ideas while living well ourselves and making space for what matters in a well balanced life.
Hi,
Is it possible to love the work we do? I believe it is.
This perspective represents a big shift for me. I used to think work had to make me miserable.
Just Rolling with It’s taught me that’s not the case. I feel grateful for this discovery.
But does doing the work we love mean giving up money?
Here’s how I used to think about it -
1 - Working is what we do to make money
2 - Working had to make me miserable
So naturally, I associated making money with being miserable.
Taking a step back, Just Rolling with It’s shifted my perspective on money. I used to view money as something to aquire, to acquire more things. The more money I made, the more things I had to acquire.
This cycle continued. It made me miserable. I also believe it’s the cycle modern society encourages us to chase.
Just Rolling with It’s broken this cycle for me. I now see money as a practical necessity.
While not an ascetic by any means, this journey’s taught me what’s important to “have”. I’ve stripped my material needs back to more of what I feel is “necessary” to exist. Of course, having a family and choosing to live in Brooklyn, NYC are strong influences on what’s “necessary”.
Still, I find my need to acquire material goods lessening each day. I’m enjoying the cleansing experience of simplifying my life. Becoming a bit of a minimalist along the way is fun too.
So, back to this idea of love and money :)
Is it possible to do the work we need to do, to generate the money we need, and love doing it? I’m beginning to think the answer is “yes” here too.
In fact, I’m beginning to believe enjoying the work we do is necessary to generate the money we need. It’s necessary if we want to do this in a healthy way, at least.
This thinking continues to evolve. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the subject as the evolution continues. Please reply directly to this email with any you’d care to share.
Catch you next week,
Chris
P.S. This week’s image sparked me to write about this idea of love and money.
