Is it OK to Like Your Work? - Just Rolling with It Weekly
Ideas on balancing entrepreneurial drive with wellness, bringing to life new ideas while living well ourselves and making space for what matters in a well balanced life.
Hi,
What do you think?
Is it OK to like your work? Is it OK to like what you do to earn a living?
Maybe the answer’s an obvious “YES” to you.
Maybe it’s “NO WAY”.
“NO WAY” used to be my answer. I was raised to believe work was work.
Work wasn’t fun. You had fun after you slugged through the work. That’s if you had any energy, enthusiasm or motivation left. Most of the time I didn’t.
What did I do instead?
I numbed myself. I did what I had to in order to tolerate another day of work.
I remember a morning in particular. It was a few weeks after I graduated college. I was a few weeks into my first job.
I thought to myself, there’s “NO WAY” I can be happy doing this for the next 20, 30 or 40 years. Then I tried to do it anyway.
I didn’t think there was any other way.
Glimpses of other ways broke through a few times. I felt guilty about them. I ignored or took half-*ssed attempts at them.
They never had a chance. They never had a chance because I never gave them a chance. I never gave them a chance because I felt guilty.
I feel grateful Just Rolling with It’s taught me it’s OK to like the work I do. Learning and believing this is making it possible for me to start doing more and more work I enjoy.
A lot of the work I’m doing is actually fun now. I still have to remember to let myself have fun doing it.
This feels hopeful :)
How about you? Do you believe your work can be fun?
